After fourteen years in the Virgin Islands chartering our schooner, Satori, we sold her and moved to
the mountains of Western North Carolina where we established the 117 acre Eco Cove Wildlife
Sanctuary. Eco Cove was previously a Boy Scout Camp and, at one time, home to one of the largest
stills in WNC (or so we've been told by local neighbors). The dam had washed out from the 2 acre lake,
so we rebuilt it as an acre pond bordered by a large meadow (where we enjoy bonfires). We built a 32'
x 24' pavilion overlooking the pond that has electricity and a large picnic table and grill. A dock and
swim float were built in the pond for easy entry, and as a place to watch the stars at night. Some of our
Koi are 5 pounds, and cruise the shallows by the colorful waterlilies, iris, and pickerel weed.
Gabrielle is an avid gardener, and Eco Cove is a wonderland of beautiful blossoms, from the spirit
shade garden to the wildflower meadows. The natural beauty is magnificent; each season is its own
unique treasure. We offer a canoe and truck inner tubes for floating, one of our favorite after-work
summertime activities. We also have two small ponds in front of our house, which is a few hundred
yards beyond the main pond. Eco Cove House is further down the road, hidden beyond the trees, in a
sunny meadow in the forest adjacent to the 67,000 acre Pisgah National Forest. Ed raised trout in our
pond and sold them to local restaurants for 7 years; however he is now a Workforce Investment
Counselor at the local Joblink, and we no longer have trout. Gabrielle is Coordinator of Library
Services at McDowell Technical Community College in Marion and a freelance writer. Lyric graduated
from UNC Chapel Hill, and now works for Women for Women, a non-profit, humanitarian organization
that helps women survivors of war, poverty and injustice. Our goal, throughout our island years, was
to show our guests the best vacation they ever had. Now we are able to offer a beautiful mountain
paradise to our guests, continuing the tradition of the very best--from our family to yours!
